Designed for driver assistance and Level 3 (and above) autonomous driving, the MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) is a targeting radar, long-range forward radar and '4D' radar, "but can also be used for corner and center radar architectures processing, so-called 'satellite' automotive radar systems," according to the company.

Dubbed the RAA270205, it has four transmit channels and four receive channels and supports up to 16 MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) operations, as well as cascading for more channels and better radar resolution.

Inside the 7.6 x 5.6 mm ball grid array there is an ADC (112.5 Msamples/s), a VCO (-97.5 dBn). /Hz phase noise at 1 MHz), PLL (low noise -226 dBs), PA, LNA, 360° phase shifters for beamforming accelerators and signal processing. Bandwidth up to 5 GHz is available.

Specifications include 1.2W consumption (estimated 970mW at 40fps), 9dB noise figure, and 300MHz/µs chip frequency.

Among the safety mechanisms targeted to meet the functional safety requirements of ISO26262 are loopback chip testing, voltage monitors, clock monitors, and digital error checking.

"It will fully meet automotive industry requirements such as IATF 16949, AEC -Q100 Grade2 and ASIL B," said Renesas, which plans product samples in the first quarter of next year.
